Rowing boat

Rowing boat

Rowing boats are another original principle of moving across the water, and they are at home worldwide on just about every stretch of water deeper than 30 cm. Rowing boats come in almost every shape, length and design.

Rowing boat. Rowing boat? Rowing boat!

They are among the small boats, have used the same principle since the dawn of time and can be found anywhere there is water more than 30 cm deep – rowing boats are among the archetypes of getting around on the water.
Rowing boats are moved with the help of oars or sculls. The rowers usually sit with their backs to the direction of travel.
Today, two types of rowing boats are generally distinguished:

Rowing boats come in almost every shape and design

Recreational rowing boats. They come in almost every shape and design. Almost anything that floats and is big enough to carry a person can be moved by rowing. Whether an elegant classic hull in wood or a square fiberglass box – people row on every occasion. Until the outboard motor was invented, rowing boats were, alongside sailboats, the only economically usable means of travel on the water; today rowing boats are used almost exclusively for recreation.
On these rowing boats, usually 2.50 and rarely more than 8 meters long, couples drift into the sunset, anglers head out to their fishing grounds, crews row out to yachts lying at anchor or swinging on their buoys (see also tender, dinghy) and athletes (sometimes) even work their way across the Atlantic.

Racing rowing boats

Mostly built from composite materials, these high-tech racers are the fastest boats ever moved by muscle power. The rower or rowers – the World Rowing Federation specifies various competition classes, from the skiff (single) through pair and four combinations (with or without coxswain) to the coxed eight – sit with their backs to the direction of travel on a sliding seat. This seat in turn rolls back and forth along a track with the rowing movements of the upper body.

Other current rowing boat variants: gig rowing boat (for recreational rowing), forward-facing rowing boat, surf rowing boat (surfing waves while rowing).
