Jet ski – the motorcycle of the water

Jet skis don't have the best reputation, but when used and ridden considerately, they are fascinating watercraft that have seen an unexpected boom in recent years.

The term jet ski

Jet skis, or personal watercraft, are usually divided into two categories: "stand-ups" for one person and "sit-downs" for up to four people.
Jet skis and personal watercraft are mostly used as fun craft in water sports, but they also serve water police, customs authorities and international lifesaving organizations (in that case even with a platform at the stern for rescuing and securing casualties) as fast and agile response craft. The latter version is also used as a tow and rescue craft in surfing.
Sporting events for personal watercraft are held in many European countries.

Do "jets" fly across the water?

"Jet" refers to the particular form of propulsion used by personal watercraft. A water jet drive (propulsion unit with reaction thrust) drives an impeller working inside a nozzle.
Jet skis, jet boats and personal watercraft are relatively lightweight constructions by nature. They are fitted with comparatively powerful combustion engines (up to more than 300 hp) and reach speeds of up to 130 km/h on smooth water. Some manufacturers now also offer personal watercraft with electric propulsion.
Since you can fall off a personal watercraft, in most European countries they have to be secured with a quick-stop system. A lanyard connects the rider to the engine (usually via the ignition switch), which stops immediately as soon as the connection is broken.

Where are jet skis banned?

Because of their relatively high and often irritating noise levels (with combustion engines) and their frequent use close to shorelines and beaches (a risk for swimmers), jet skis are only permitted with heavy restrictions in many European countries. In some countries, for example, their use is banned on almost all inland lakes and strictly regulated on waterways (e.g. only at certain times of day). A strict ban on all lakes and rivers applies in Switzerland and in Austria.

Where are jet skis allowed?

Along Europe's coasts, jet skis, jet boats and personal watercraft are permitted almost everywhere. In many countries, however, local regulations have to be observed. Along some stretches of coast, speed checks are carried out and violations are punished consistently (and expensively).
Which licenses are required for jet skis depends on the regulations of the country in question. Even if you "only" want to spend your vacation at the sea on a jet ski, you should always find out which licenses are needed and what local restrictions and rules apply.

Who should buy a jet ski?

Jet skis are fun if you…

  • also love riding a motorcycle on land
  • have always been tempted by a motorcycle, but find the asphalt too unforgiving
  • actually have suitable waters you can ride on
  • want to take your watercraft along on vacation
  • plan to use it regularly as an escort and rescue boat for surfers
