Canoe

The oldest form of travel on the water has barely changed in principle to this day. Only the building materials reflect modern times, even though a few fine boatbuilders still produce wonderful canoes made of wood. Just where the difference between a canoe, a Canadian canoe and a kayak lies is explained in the following lines.

The term canoe

There is some confusion around the names given to these boats, which are moved by one or more people using paddles and are therefore also called paddle boats.
"Canoe" is commonly used as an umbrella term. The best-known types of canoe are the "Canadian canoe" and the "kayak".
Worth noting: in French, for example, the sport as a whole is referred to as canoë/kayak.

Kayaks are (traditionally) closed boats in which the paddler sits with their legs stretched out forward, propelling the boat with a double-bladed paddle. The Canadian canoe, by contrast, is an open canoe in which you kneel and which is moved forward with a single-bladed paddle. Many touring canoes also have seats fitted, since many people find kneeling for longer periods uncomfortable. Better control of the boat is, however, achieved from a kneeling position.

Canoes have been around for 4,500 years

Today's canoe shape is considered one of the oldest boat designs of all. Indigenous peoples such as the Inuit in the Arctic used kayaks made of animal skins for thousands of years, even taking them whale hunting on the Arctic Ocean. Canoes as much as 4,500 years old have also been found in the Euphrates/Tigris region.
The Canadian canoe originates from North America. Early versions were built from tree bark, animal bones and hides. In the Polynesian South Pacific, outrigger canoes were even used on long sea voyages.

Material

Modern canoes are made of fiberglass, PVC, carbon and aluminum. Wood as a building material mainly appeals to lovers of classic boats. Since the 1950s, folding paddle boats, with fabric stretched over a wooden frame, have been very popular.

Recreational and competition boats

Canoeing distinguishes between recreational boats and competition boats.

Canoe touring on large inland waters, for example, is very popular. Canadian canoes are preferred for long distances thanks to their greater load capacity, although kayaks are also in demand for day trips. Sea kayaking takes place in salt water along the coasts of seas and oceans. Waves, currents and navigation make this pastime particularly exciting. Whitewater paddling takes place on rivers and streams.

Competitive sports built around the canoe:

  • Canoe sprint – Olympic disciplines are the single, double and four-person kayak (women & men) as well as the single and double Canadian canoe (men only). Usual race distances are 200, 500 and 1000 m.
  • Canoe slalom (Olympic)
  • Wildwater canoeing. Single kayak (women & men) as well as single (women & men) and double Canadian canoe (men only), as individual and team races.
  • Dragon boat racing (mainly in Asia)
  • Canoe marathon (classic marathon distance 42.192 km)
  • Canoe polo
