[Motoryacht ist ein sehr weitläufiger Begriff für Motorboote bzw. für motorisierte Freizeitboote mit einem bewohnbaren Kabinenbereich. Anwendung findet der Begriff in der Regel ab einer Bootslänge von neun Metern. Darunter spricht man von Sportbooten, wobei diese durchaus einen kleinen Wohnbereich aufweisen können. Ab einer Länge von 25 Metern spricht man von Megayachten. Schiffseigner neigen jedoch gerne dazu, ihr Motorboot als „Schiff“ oder „Motoryacht“ zu bezeichnen. Unabhängig der Bauart oder Länge. Konstruktiv kann es sich bei einer Motoryacht um eine Gleityacht, einen schnellen Verdränger – umgangssprachlich auch Halbgleiter genannt – oder um einen Verdränger handeln. Auch der Werkstoff – Stahl, Kunststoff, Holz, Stahlbeton – nimmt darauf keinen Einfluss. Das klassische Merkmal der Motoryacht ist der bereits erwähnte bewohnbare Kabinenbereich. Eingerichtet mit Salon, Pantry, Navigationsecke, Nasszelle mit oder ohne separater Dusche sowie einer oder mehrerer Schlafkabinen. Komfortstandards wie Druckwasser – warm und kalt – 12-Volt-Innenraumbeleuchtung, Generator, Landanschluss, Herd, Backofen und Kühlschrank sollten vorhanden sein. Ebenso eine nach Fahrtrevier und Einsatzzweck ausgerichtete elektronische Navigationsausstattung. Die Motoryacht wird im Regelfall mit einer Doppelmotorisierung angeboten, wobei vorherrschend Dieselaggregate zum Einsatz kommen. Ausnahmen bilden die Schweizer Seen, da in diesem Land Benzin preiswerter ist als Diesel und die durchschnittliche Betriebsdauer pro Saison bei ökonomischen 25 Motorstunden liegt.]
