J Boats

For five decades now, the American yard J/Boats has been one of the most influential and successful manufacturers of sporty keelboats worldwide. The company was founded in 1977 in Newport, Rhode Island, by the Johnstone brothers: Rod was regarded as a gifted yacht designer, while Bob had a knack for marketing. The starting point was a self-built prototype: Rod Johnstone's 24-foot boat Ragtime, built in 1976 (where else?) in a garage. It proved so superior on the race course that it led to series production of the J/24 – a boat that laid the foundation for the brand's extraordinary success.

Light, fast, demanding – and yet suitable for everyday use!

With the J/24, J/Boats achieved a milestone in sailing history. More than 5,500 units built, an international one-design class that is still active today and a worldwide regatta presence made the boat one of the best-selling keelboats of all time. This defined and revealed the yard's philosophy from the very beginning: J boats should always be light, fast and demanding to sail – while still remaining suitable for everyday use. J/Boats consistently positioned itself between regatta performance and comfortable cruising, and in doing so shaped the category of the performance cruiser.

More than 14,000 units – 35 sales countries

Over the course of the 1980s and 1990s, J/Boats developed into a global player. Production initially remained anchored in the USA, but licensed construction at partner yards in Europe, South Africa, South America and Asia made the boats available worldwide. In Europe in particular, the close cooperation with J Composites in France played a central role. A large proportion of the models for the European market were built or further developed there. In total, more than 14,000 J/Boats have been sold in more than 35 countries to date.

In terms of design and technology, J/Boats is considered one of the most innovative companies in modern yacht building. A very special impulse came from the J/105 in 1991: this boat was the first to consistently combine a retractable bowsprit with an asymmetric spinnaker on a production keelboat. This concept revolutionized sporty cruising and became the industry standard in the following decades. Back then, J/Boats also relied on lightweight sandwich construction, balanced hull shapes and rigs that deliver high performance even with a small crew.

Award-winning and successful

The brand's success is reflected not only in sales figures, but also in awards and regatta results. Or does one lead to the other? J/Boats models have been named "Boat of the Year" by international trade media more than 20 times (as of 2025). Several designs have been inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame. Five J-Boats models and their classes are officially recognized by World Sailing: J/22, J/24, J/70, J/80 and J/111. On racecourses from Cowes Week and the Fastnet Race to the Sydney–Hobart, J-Boats have claimed numerous class wins and overall victories.

The J/Boats model range is broad: alongside classics such as the J/22, J/27, J/35, J/44 and J/105, sporty daysailers, powerful and highly successful racing boats as well as offshore-capable performance yachts have been created over the years. Particularly successful in recent years is the J/70, a modern sport boat with enormous international class strength and more than 1,400 units built. Among other events, Sailing Bundesliga races in Germany and Austria are held on the J70.

Second generation already at the helm

To this day, J/Boats is shaped and run by the Johnstone family. The second generation has long been involved in design, management and marketing. Despite technical advances, modern production methods and an international focus, the original ambition has remained unchanged. J-Boats puts it this way: "We want to build sailboats that are fast, honest, durable and inspiring to sail!" A high standard – and one that has been fully met to date.
