Water sports giant with potential
Bavaria is one of the most modern manufacturers of sailing yachts (monohulls and catamarans). Founded in 1978 by window manufacturer Herrmann and yacht charter broker Meltl, the shipyard quickly rose to become a European and later a global industry leader. In 2006, the company employed more than 600 people in Giebelstadt and produced over 3,000 yachts per year.
The designer duo Judel & Vrolijk played a decisive part in the rise of the Bavaria shipyard: they reworked the design, originally described as "ponderous" and overly "ship-like", and gave Bavaria sailing yachts modern lines. Together with the yard's tightly calculated pricing policy, this turned Bavaria sailboats into popular charter and family yachts.
Several takeovers
After a US financial investor took over the company from its founders in 2007, the economic crisis of 2008/09 caused severe losses in revenue. Following a debt restructuring, the shipyard was handed over to two US hedge funds.
In 2010, the Italian shipyard Cantiere del Prado with the brands Dufour and Grand Soleil was acquired, and in 2014 the French catamaran manufacturer Nautitech was added. Despite a now broad model range that was able to serve many target groups, the company's capacities were not fully utilized – in 2018 the company filed for insolvency. For a transitional period, Bavaria continued to operate under self-administration and with the committed efforts of its employees.
New investor – new course
At the end of 2018, Bavaria was taken over by the financial investor CMP, which aims to bring the insolvent producer of motor and sailing yachts back "on course" with a fundamental overhaul of its production processes and new boat models.
Models: The Bavaria Yachten shipyard achieved its high profile with sailing yachts that scored above all with a good price-performance ratio. With the construction of catamarans, Bavaria is now also positioning itself in the steadily growing market for cruising cats.
