An American brand with a deep offshore history
Wellcraft was founded in 1955 in Sarasota, Florida, and is one of the best-known names in American powerboat building. The yard quickly made its name with sport boats and fast planing hulls, and later above all with fishing boats, offshore models and the legendary Scarab line. That is exactly where the yard's reputation came from: plenty of power "under the hood", range, and boats that don't give up easily in rough seas.
Deep-V, stepped hulls and high-speed expertise
Technically, Wellcraft draws heavily on its offshore past. From 1970 onwards, the yard worked with C. Raymond Hunt, whose deep-V hulls are considered groundbreaking for fast, seaworthy powerboats. Added to this were step-lift concepts, i.e. steps in the underwater hull designed to improve planing behavior, efficiency and top speed. Wellcraft did not invent these ideas on its own, but the brand brought them to the market early and visibly – and thus helped make the modern offshore powerboat popular.
Scarab, Miami Vice and the big pop culture boost
The Scarab family is an inseparable part of the brand's myth. In the 1980s, the Wellcraft Scarab 38 KV in particular became known far beyond the boating scene, not least thanks to the American TV series "Miami Vice". Back then, Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Rico Tubbs were out on the water in fast Wellcraft boats. This TV effect was worth its weight in gold for Wellcraft: the Scarab became a symbol of offshore speed, and suddenly Wellcraft also stood for pace in pop culture.
Today: outboards, in the past: inboards and sterndrives
The current Wellcraft range is clearly geared toward outboards. You can see this in today's Fisherman, T-Top, Speedster and Explorer models, all of which are offered with outboards. Historically, however, the brand was more broadly positioned; inboard and sterndrive configurations left the Wellcraft yard halls in the top models for many years.
The Beneteau effect is clearly noticeable
The fact that Wellcraft looks different today than it did in the Scarab era has a lot to do with its "new" owner. The brand belongs to Groupe Beneteau, and the more recent Wellcrafts in particular feel distinctly more European: more weather protection, more volume, cleaner interior solutions, finer styling and an altogether more refined appearance. That is not a departure from the US offshore DNA, but rather a new interpretation of it. The fact that designers such as Michael Peters, Pawel Denert and Camillo Garroni are named for the younger models fits this picture exactly.
Where the brand is heading today
Wellcraft currently splits its lineup roughly into Fisherman models, T-Top/Speedster boats and the Explorer line. What they all share is a clear planing focus, the walkaround principle, high freeboards, a rugged offshore look and powerful outboards. The tone has changed, though: less power hype than in the past, more range, more security and protection from the elements, more day and weekend usability. That's exactly what makes the new Wellcrafts interesting – above all for buyers who like American performance but appreciate a little more European common sense in the design and on board.
Models
Today, Wellcraft stands above all for three worlds: Fisherman boats with strong fishing and offshore utility, sporty center console boats with a crossover layout, and the Explorer models as offshore boats with more protection and range.
