Draco: A boat brand with history and tradition
Draco was founded in 1963 by Norwegian Kåre Drangsholt in Flekkefjord. In the 1970s, Draco grew into one of the most successful Scandinavian powerboat yards.
Working closely with engineer Jan Herman Linge, Drangsholt developed the Sportling, Stirling and Styling models, described as "racy, innovative and forward-looking" – all three models stand for a design that remained unchanged for years and was successful across Europe. In the powerboat scene, Draco models were considered state of the art and were mentioned in the same breath as major Italian names and brands such as Riva.
In 1983, Kåre Drangsholt drowned at the age of 42.
After the death of the charismatic shipyard boss, things went steadily downhill for Draco. Nine years later, the company had to file for insolvency and was bought up "at the last moment" by the Swedish powerboat manufacturer and former competitor Windy.
But Windy did not manage to jump on Draco's "success train". Only a few Draco boats were still sold after the takeover – shortly afterwards, Draco production was discontinued (for the time being).
Draco's world
Draco produced boat models between 17 and 34 feet in 13 size classes (cabin boats, runabouts, flybridge) and in different equipment variants. The design and finish quality of Draco boats were regarded as perfected boatbuilding craftsmanship.
The rebirth
The Windy boatyard is still successful on the powerboat market today. In 2014, Windy brought the former success brand back to life with the Draco 22RS and Draco27RS models (both bowriders). With the 27-foot RS model, Draco even earned the title "Powerboat of the Year 2015".
Draco on the market
Draco boats sit in the mid-price segment of their respective length and equipment category and stand for an exceptionally attractive value for money. Boats from the 1970s and 1980s (some listed as classic powerboats) are still offered today in good condition at interesting prices.
