The term cabin boat is used for both sailing boats and power boats. In modern yachting terminology, however, the term cabin boat is often replaced by 'sports boat with a cabin'. The term cabin boat is now mostly used in traditional nautical language. In the power boat segment (motor-powered leisure boats or sports boats), a cabin boat typically refers to a small to medium power boat (up to about eight meters in length) with an enclosed bow area. The space below is accessible, habitable and lockable. As a rule, the cabin of a cabin boat has no standing headroom and consists of a single compartment. Depending on length, model and equipment, the cabin may offer seating and berths, a small galley and a chemical toilet. There is no single hull type associated with a cabin boat. In the power boat segment, a cabin boat can be designed as a planing hull, a fast-displacement hull or a displacement hull.
